DanicaDanica Sue Patrick is an American former professional racing racer. She is the most successful American open-wheel racing female. Her win at the Indy Japan 300 in 2008 is her first triumph. With her parents' consent she quit high school and emigrated to the United Kingdom in 1998 to pursue a career in the sport. Patrick participated in Formula Vauxhall, Formula Ford prior to returning to the United States in 2001. In 2002, she participated in five Barber Dodge Pro Series races in conjunction with Rahal Letterman racing. Patrick then raced in the Toyota Atlantic Series for the two years that followed. Her best finish was third in the championship standings for the 2004 season when she became the first female to be awarded a pole in the series.She first drove in the IndyCar Series with Rahal Letterman Racing in 2005. She took three poles, equalling Tomas Scheckter's record for poles in her rookie season. She was named the 2005 IndyCar Series Rookie of Year. She improved over the next two years by joining Rahal Letterman Racing in 2006 and, later, Andretti Green Racing in 2007. Patrick finished sixth overall in the drivers standings in 2008 following her Japan victory. She improved her position to finish fifth in drivers' standings following the season. This was her most impressive performance at the Indianapolis 500 and a career-high for Patrick. Patrick's overall performances slowed down during 2010but she was able to finish second at the oval tracks. She left IndyCar in 2011 to pursue stock car racing full time.
